The right to grow up safe.
"A child that is safe, feels all the space to dream about a future. A child that feels unsafe, can only dream of safety."
Topic 1:A. Have a conversation in your group about 'what does it take to make me feel safe?'.
B. A conversation about safety raises all kinds of feelings and thoughts; a Pantoum is a beautiful way to express it.
A Pantoum is a verse, a poem of 20 lines, in which lines are repeated. With this format, you can write your own poem in a short time, about how you feel at that moment or what actually appears before your eyes. You don't have to create beautiful sentences and having a talent for rhyming is not necessary. What matters is that you write the first thought that comes into mind, without correcting yourself. Make room for your feelings! This is easiest if it is read to you by a classmate, to react as spontaneously as possible. If you make a rap of this text, it will even be stronger... can you make a clip for your contribution in the wiki?
The schedule for the Pantoum is:
Line 1: I feel safe. Line 2: I .... (describe where you are) Line 3: I .... (describe what you see) Line 4: describe how it feels in relation to the word 'safe'
Line 5: is equal to line 2 Line 6: is a feeling response to line 2: what does it do to you? Line 7: is equal to line 4 Line 8: is your response to line 7
Line 9: is equal to line 6 Line 10: what do you experience? Line 11: is equal to line 8 Line 12: how is that?
Line 13: is equal to line 10 Line 14: how does that feel? Line 15: is equal to line 12 Line 16: what is your response?
Line 17: is equal to line 14 Line 18: is equal to line 3 Line 19: is equal to line 16 Line 20: is equal to line 1
Topic 2:
Every child has the right to be protected and feel safe. This is not the case in every part of the world; in more than 30 countries children live in a war or deal with the consequences of a war.
A. Read this story and carefully discuss it with your group members:
There are countries in which many people live in a civil war for years or where neighbouring countries are in conflict. Different groups are fighting each other to obtain power and control the country. Sometimes there are armed struggles and tensions are high.
Please take a look at this site:
B. Research After looking at these websites, you'll continue to study the situation in one of the conflicted countries. You can also divide the class into groups and choose several countries.
Explain the causes of the conflict in the places that you studied :
Mention the sources you used (name, organisation, URL).
C. Write a letter Write a letter to the governments or leaders of the involved parties in the conflict:
Discuss how you can present your research and letters in the wiki.
Topic 3:
"The world is on fire, but children didn’t light it"
Design and create:
Present your work with pictures, records or film to the other participants.

Additional questions and answers. If during the challenge phase students come up with additional questions they would like to ask to their fellow students, we welcome them to post their questions. Yet, remember that asking for "facts and figures" stimulates students to just Google the answer. Values, opinions, interviews, ranking their findings will stimulate students to think critically. Please take into consideration possible cultural differences and post questions that are 'open' and initiate research. |

Please post questions (and answers) to your Learning Circle partners on this page. |
